The Refill System
Most candles are one-use. The jar gets thrown away. The piece, if ceramic, chips in recycling. We designed something different — a hand-thrown piece you keep forever, and a clean wax refill that drops straight in.
How it works
The refill system is simple by design. A pre-poured coconut-soy wax insert fits snugly into your piece. When it's finished, it lifts cleanly out — no digging, no mess, no wasted wax left behind. You drop the new one in, and you're lit again.
The insert is made in the same silicone mould every time, so the fit is exact. The wax contracts slightly as it cools, which means it releases naturally from the mould and sits perfectly in your piece with no gaps around the edge.
Your pre-poured wax insert arrives wrapped in paper, plastic-free. It's ready to use — no prep, no pouring, no mess.
When your current candle is spent, the cooled wax insert lifts cleanly out of the piece. A gentle push from the wick end releases it whole.
Place the new insert into your piece. It settles to a flush fit. The wick centres itself. You're ready to light within seconds.
The spent wax insert is coconut-soy — it can be composted or used as a firestarter. The silicone wrapper we ship with is reusable. Nothing goes to landfill.
The wax
We use a coconut-soy blend. It's not the cheapest wax. It's the right wax — cleaner burning, longer lasting, better scent throw than paraffin, and fully plant-derived.
Coconut wax is the cleanest-burning of all plant waxes. It's hydrogenated coconut oil — a renewable, sustainable crop — and it burns cool and slow, which means a longer burn time and a softer, truer scent release. It also has a naturally creamy texture that sits beautifully in a ceramic piece.

Soy wax gives the blend structure. It raises the melt point slightly, which means the insert holds its shape in warm weather and releases cleanly from the mould. Soy is a domestically grown crop in the US and fully biodegradable — no petrochemicals, no petroleum derivatives.

We use natural cotton wicks — no metal core, no zinc, no lead. The wick size is matched to the piece diameter so you get a full melt pool across the top of the insert without overheating the wax or producing excess soot. The wick is centred in every insert before it sets.

We use phthalate-free fragrance oils and true essential oils — no hidden hormone disruptors, no synthetic fillers we can't name. Every scent ingredient is disclosed on our website. If we can't tell you what's in it, it doesn't go in the wax. That's the Dolva standard.

What you will never find in a Dolva refill

Each refill burns for approximately 40–50 hours. For most people burning 4–5 evenings a week, that's around six weeks. So that's our recommended cadence — every six weeks, a new insert arrives before you run out. Adjust to suit how you actually burn.
